Surrey Hills Primary School has entered a new and innovative stage in it’s history since it was established in 1886. A major rebuilding project which is provided  21st century open and flexible learning spaces for all students is now completed. The original two-storey brick school building has been refurbished to provide functional and flexible use for staff, administration and the wider school community. Open flexible learning zones provide a platform for individualised learning opportunities. The construction of the Community Precinct with basketball/netball court, Performing Arts and community facilities is fully utilised before, during and after school. The majority of the 400+ students are from the immediate locality of Surrey Hills, which covers the Municipal Council areas of the City of Whitehorse and the City of Boroondara. Students exiting in Year 6 attend both State and private secondary schools in the area.

Our school has an excellent reputation for its commitment to quality education. The school has a highly motivated, professional and caring staff who put the needs of the students first, planning and implementing teaching and learning programs, which develop initiative, co-operation, independence and excellence. Over the next three years the school will focus on improving learning and teaching with a particular emphasis on individualised learning and the embedding of ICT and Thinking Curriculum within day to day classroom practice.

The school recognises that students have different learning styles, talents and interests and provides specialist programs in Physical and Sport Education, Performing and Visual Arts, Science and LOTE (Mandarin). Literacy Intervention programs include; Reading Recovery and support for students with identified needs. Instrumental Music program (including strings) Mini Singers & Choir, Dance Groups, Student Council, Camps & excursions and special interest and activity days extend learning opportunities further. An Out of Hours School Care program and holiday program is conducted off site. Effective communication between teachers and parents is facilitated through a weekly newsletter, informal meetings, information evenings, interviews, Student Learning Journal reports, class letters and school assemblies.
